185 chairs

A poignant memorial to the people who died in the earthquake. It looks on the back of the cardboard cathedral, and is diagonally across the street from the site of the CTV building, where 115 of those people, including many foreign language students, died.

Christchurch’s “transitional cathedral”

Designed pro bono by Japanese "disaster" architect Shiguru Ban and opened in 2013, it's a lovely building ingeniously made of shipping containers and polycarbonate sheeting. Last night it was filled for Evensong.
