This is definitely food. These mushrooms must come from the extensive forests I passed by train on the trip out to Fussen, near the Austrian border. Given how much rain is pouring today, with flooded ditches and creeks up high, I expect there will be an excellent mushroom harvest this fall.
The ride to Fussen reminds me of Washington State, especially where the fake Bavarian town of Leavensworth is located. Same type of steep misty mountains, same type of Tyrolean houses, all tile roof and gingerbread porches.
I got to Fussen in a downpour and totally soaked on short ride from bahnhof to hostel.
No doubt a lovely place when sun is out.
Apparently there's a Volksfest tonight just outside of town, with Tirolean music and some sort of dancing. I'm not up to it. I just want to find a good restaurant in town and warm up with something authentic to go with a beer. Something with mushrooms would be nice. My shoes are soaked, my socks are soaked, I just chained my bike in the woodshed out back. The hostel is a curious place with a lot of people milling about. I'm in the cheap seat, a 6 bed room with 5 guy roommates so far. Whatever. Once I put in the earplugs and slip on an eyemask, it all disappears.
I hope it stops raining tomorrow so it's worth a ride out to the castle. It's less than 5km on a bikepath. Not sure if I want to buy a ticket for the tour. So many of these places are much better from the outside, and ornate isn't my favourite style.
I'll read my guidebook tonight while waiting for my dinner, and decide if it's worth an early start to get to ticket booth for timed ticket.
