Riding local, riding abroad. Doesn't matter. "One less car" bike commuting and "Bikes Belong" advocacy, plus "I ride solo" bicycle travel. Racing is fun, but there are so many equally great reasons to ride.

Traffic jam outside Darrington
It took forever to get to the TH for North Fork of Sauk River. Didn't start hiking until 4pm and it's as hot as blazes.

Mid ride snack
I stopped at Starbucks HQ for expensive but tasty vegetable focaccia and a chai latte. It's hard to resist the mermaid calling to me as I negotiate the scary construction zone and general filth of Seattle's waterfront where the tunnel is still TBA. I don't enjoy riding this piece of the route to West Seattle but I promised myself some exercise to/from work. It's 30 miles so hardly insignificant when you have to pack clothes, lunch and teaching kit.

Another one bites the dust
From my ride to work at South Seattle College this morning. Somehow I don't think that in 50-100 years' time anyone will feel sad when the bland boxes that are planned to replace this dilapidated old lady get demolished.

Excellent crepes
The couple running this cute gypsy caravan were slammed, but the $8 pear, chèvre and walnut Lopez special was tasty.

Sea birds trying to pant themselves cool at the Anacortes ferry dock
It's over 80 degrees so these nesting birds are vibrating their throats and keeping their beaks open to cool off.
Memory jogger
The only flavor needed for a trip to the Rock: wild blackberry! A treat after the god awful I-5 parking lot on Friday the 13th.

From Myrtle Edwards park
For the end of my 62 miles I rested on a park bench and ate an energy bar and watched the Norwegian something cruise ship heading out to Alaska.
