Riding local, riding abroad. Doesn't matter. "One less car" bike commuting and "Bikes Belong" advocacy, plus "I ride solo" bicycle travel. Racing is fun, but there are so many equally great reasons to ride.

Sunset Hill rainy day walk
The change of seasons to fall seems so sudden and melancholic, so I'm doing daily walks to raise my spirits. This house usually doesn't have an elegant garden, but the garishness and plastic whirligigs aren't too dominant yet.

A hunter headed up to my basin
Only the 2nd time I've hiked this, and the first as a backup. Perhaps next time I'll camp in Alpine Meadows campground and day hike so I have the energy to climb another 1,000' to the saddle and views of Maude.

My first quince of the season
This year I'll have enough to make a few special desserts! This one fell off the branch so I suppose it's ripe😏

Easing back into civilian life
Breakfast in Hood River at Columbia Gorge hotel, after a night of free stealth camping off I-5. It would have been dangerous to try to drive nearly 300 miles home after an exhausting bike even, so I didn't. Nice view of the Columbia even if the hotel is a bit shabby these days.

Downhill spoiled by some probably hotshot rider proving not a hotshot at all
Queuing to ride in groups of six down a hill you've earned is bad. Some idiot wipes out so everyone else is treated like a preschooler. Last day of Cycle Oregon. Hot and boring at the 41 mile mark so I sagged into Albany.

Dinner by dredge in Toledo OR
Two nights of camping in the logging yards of Toledo, and a unique breakfast and dinner show of the Army Corps of Engineers dredging Toledo harbor.

Today’s route was 76 miles and 4,900’ elevation and I decided to use my brains and take a different route
I did 54 miles and 3,000 feet instead. I also swapped what I knew would be a disheartening slog, crawling late into camp after walking most of the elevation. Instead, I stayed in the saddle and negotiated the often fast and noisy traffic on 101 and the 7 miles of stupid racetrack that's 20 from Newport to Toledo. And I got to camp by 4pm! This is why I'm chuffed. Brains over brawn every time!
My Wednesday route
It's a perfect day for the Oregon coast so it made no sense to me to kill my self on a hammer fest inland.
