Naive, unlucky, harmless dreamer

I'd read John Krakauer's book on Chris McCandless several years before Sean Penn made his wonderful movie. Several people have mentioned the connection between McCandless' romanticized ideal of the wild with that of Everett Ruess, another young dreamer who perished two generations before Chris.
It's easy to see why Alaska inspires idealists who seek an escape from conventional America.
